Do I need a tower to use the PPC boards?

Technically no. Whilst it is possible to stick a PowerUp board in your basic A1200 case part of it will stick out of the bottom, where the trapdoor is. This will mean that you have to increase the height of the A1200, I stuck the caps from my asthma sprays on the bottom. The other problem you will have is the amount of heat produced. The A1200 casing simply cannot fit the PPC board inside and keep it completely cool. Buy a tower, you'll be able to expand your Amiga even further and make it look a bit more professional.
