How do you use a modem between two Amigas?

This is a basic tutorial on how to setup modem sharing between two Amigas- the server (connected to the modem) and the client. You will require a TCP/IP stack, such as AmiTCP or Genesis. This will also work with Miami although it has not been tested. A name server is also required on the server machine, otherwise the server cannot resolve anything. One can be found on Aminet. A 9k download in comm/tcp called named.lha

  • Firstly configure AmiTCP on the server machine so that it can establish a ppp/slip connection with your ISP.
  • Configure your client so that it can connect via a serial link. Give this machine an IP number, for example, 10.10.10.2.
  • Add the following line to the user-startnet on the server:
amitcp:bin/ifconfig <interface> <ip-server> <ip-client>
So, if you were using the example IP number above it would appear something like this:
amitcp:bin/ifconfig cslip0 10.10.10.1 10.10.10.2
If everything went fine, AmiTCP will setup this second connection after the connection to you ISP. You can test it by typing 'ping 10.10.10.1' in a shell on the clientside and 'ping 10.10.10.' on the serverside.

Using Genesis is even simpler. You simply add another device in the prefs program. You'll need to go to: Provider, Interfaces. There youll see your ppp/slip device which connects to your ISP. Here you'll need to add a new interface.

Using Genesis you can individually connect the devices. But you'll need to change/add the line: 'Gateway = YES' in the AmiTCP.config file. This should be done by both AmiTCP and Genesis.

After you set up the main part, it is time for the socks-server. This is straight forward, all you have to do is read the manual.
