How many colours can an icon have?

It depends upon the machine and the number of bitplanes that you are using. ECS users can use up to 16 colours in their icons, whilst AGA users can only use 8. AmigaOS 3.1+ users with graphics cards will be able to use a 256-colour icon palette.

Remember that if you are using either the standard icons or Magic Workbench the icon palette will not be save with the icon, so changing your background image may make the icons appear ugly. For Amiga owners who wish to have a standardised mode of remembering icon colours use the freeware utility, NewIcons. This allows up to 32 colours to be used in an icon and is intelligently configured to use a colour as close as possible to that saved. It can also remove the irritating square border around Amiga icons.
