Is there a problem with IBM hard drives? I have swapped mine several times and they all crash after an hour.

This could be a problem with your power supply. The brick shipped with the A1200 is not very powerful and can only handle one or two devices. As a short term measure you can use one from an A500, connect a PC power supply using a bit of DIY, or buy a new one. These are in short supply nowadays and may be difficult to find.
