The Access

Developer: Index Information
Launch date: 1998
The Access

The Access is the first of a new breed of Amigas based upon custom-built motherboards. When fitted with its mounting frame and floppy disk drive the motherboard fits into a standard 5 1/4" drive bay. Unlike previous attempts the system is aimed at markets other than the home. This was reflected in the pricing point, varying according to the number of boards purchased. Index have announced that their system will be aimed at the following markets:

  • Education/Interactive training - CD-ROM or internet delivery.
  • Public Displays - Museums, public buildings, attractions, advertising
  • Internet access - Integrate a modem and hard disk in a half height case

  • Public kiosks - Interactive product selection and vending control.

Processor

  • 68020 14 MHz or 68030 28 MHz processor,
  • Memory
  • 2Mb Chip ram,
  • 2 or 8MB Fast RAM
  • 256K Flash ROM that stores the CD-ROM drivers.
  • 1K non-volatile memory for configuration settings.

Interfaces

  • 15-pin VGA output
  • IDE interface for optional hard drive
  • Built in sound sampler and microphone input
  • Active ISA slots for use with cheap PC devices such as modems
  • Standard 3.5 IDE interface, for easy fitting of a CD or hard drives

Other features

  • CDDA input and mixer
  • Standard A1200 ROMs (Kickstart 3.1),
  • Disk drive
  • Real time clock
  • Optional LS120 portable disk drive (a rival to the Zip that stores 120MB)
Access Motherboard- Front Access Motherboard- Behind
The Access system offers around 2.3x the average performance of an A1200,  with 30% increase in Chip RAM access. An MPEG1/Genlock unit has been promised but is notable by its absence. The use of Flash ROM also allows software upgrades to the system without replacing the chips themselves. Motherboard and Brackets
